Project statuses

What this is for

Status says whether a project is planned, active, paused or completed. You set it manually, independently of the percentage of completed tasks.

How to get there

Choose Goals & Projects → Projects (/projects). You change status in the project edit form, the menu next to a project, or the details panel of the mind map.

Step by step

  1. Next to a project, open the menu and choose Edit.
  2. Expand the additional options, choose Status and click Save.
  3. You can also make a quick change through Start project, Pause project, Resume project, Complete project or Reopen project in the list menu, depending on the current status.
  4. To find a closed project, choose the Completed filter. Reopen project restores Active.

Fields and options

A project has one status:

Status Meaning
Planned A planned project.
Active A project you are working on.
Paused A paused project; tasks and dates remain saved.
Completed A project completed manually. You can reopen it.

You change status in the project edit form, the list menu or the mind map details panel. Filters for all four statuses are available independently of the statistics. Choosing Completed shows finished projects even when they were previously hidden. By default the list shows all unfinished projects.

The Start project, Pause project, Resume project and Reopen project actions describe starting, pausing, resuming and reopening a project respectively. Paused keeps tasks in the calendar; dates still apply. The Complete project action in the details, on the list and on the map keeps all tasks and related calendar entries. Reopen project restores the Active status. The message after completion gives the number of unfinished tasks of the project itself and of open subprojects. Changing status does not require an extra confirmation.

Common mistakes / pitfalls

Progress vs. status

The completion percentage and the overdue count are separate pieces of information. A project can be Active at 100% completed tasks or Paused with overdue tasks. The parent's progress includes subproject tasks; it does not change their statuses.

For a project with open subprojects you can see their count. Completing the parent leaves them open. The map keeps a completed parent as context for still-open subprojects, even when hiding completed items is turned on.

Deleting unfinished tasks

In the details menu, Delete unfinished tasks selects unfinished tasks of this project only. Only Confirm delete selected deletes the selected tasks and their related calendar tasks. Keep tasks cancels the confirmation. This operation does not complete the project and does not delete subproject tasks.

End date

The end date comes from the server. Older projects without a reliable date are not automatically counted in the current year in the statistics.
