How to set up your public profile¶
What this is for¶
Your public profile is what other users see: avatar, display name, @handle
address, bio and your short Thoughts posts. Contact also goes through the
profile — from Society you can send a private message.
How to get there¶
You open your own profile by clicking your entry in People → Society
(/society) or the address /u/{your-handle}. You open someone else's profile
by clicking their name in Society, on the forum or next to a message.
Step by step¶
- Fill in the details in Settings → Account & profile: avatar in the image editor, Nickname (the display name across all of LOS) and the Bio field (up to 500 characters).
- Open your profile and next to Bio click Add bio or Edit, enter the text and confirm with Save.
- Below the bio is the Thoughts panel — enter content in What's on your mind? (up to 280 characters) and click Post.
- You edit and delete your own thoughts from the menu under the post.
- To disappear from the directory, turn off Show me in Society in Settings → Account & profile.
Fields and options¶
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Avatar | Photo shown next to your name; edited in Settings → Account & profile. |
| Nickname | Display name; empty means the name derived from the e-mail address. |
| Bio | Up to 500 characters; visible on the profile. |
| Thoughts | Short posts up to 280 characters; your own can be edited and deleted. |
| Entry in Society | Avatar, name, Lvl level and Rank. |
Common mistakes / pitfalls¶
- Turning off Show me in Society only hides you from the directory — the profile, bio and posts remain, and turning it back on returns you to the list.
- Someone else's profile may be unavailable: the message The profile was not found or is not public.
- Changing Nickname does not change the
@handle— the handle is used for addresses and forum mentions.
